Europa Park – Rulantica

Just 30 minutes’ drive from Hotel Vaillant you will find Europa Park, the best theme park in the world! In 2018, the park was dedicated to France, it’s beloved neighbour. At Europa Park, you can go on a tour of Europe all in just one place! France, England, Iceland or Ireland, Europa Park offers you the chance to discover the architectural, cultural and gastronomic diversity of Europe through 15 European-themed areas. You can also visit Rulantica, Europa Park’s new indoor water park, which opened in November 2019. There are also over one hundred shows and rides, including 13 roller coasters, spread across the 95-hectare tree-covered park.

Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg

Dominating the plain of Alsace, just 10 minutes’ drive from Hotel Vaillant, Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg is the most well-known castle in Alsace and one of its most visited monuments. Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg was completely restored at the request of Emperor Wilhelm II in the years following 1900. This restoration work gave the castle its originality and appeal, despite the controversy surrounding the renovation. It’s an unmissable monument.

Practical information for visiting Château du Haut-Koenigsbourg:

Free parking is available along the road leading to the château. Access is via a path through the forest or along the road, this could take between 2 to 15 minutes depending on the distance.

Entrance charge, 9€ full rate, self-guided, guided tour, audio guide and themed visits. Reduced rate 4€ for children aged 6 to 17 years and free for children under 6.

Entrance is free on the first Sunday in November and March, as well as on Heritage Days and Museum Night.

Alsace Wine Route

The famous wine route starts just 3 km away from Hotel Vaillant. It winds for 170 km from the north to south Alsace, through the different colours of the vines and its 7 grape varieties (Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Pinot noir, gris or blanc, Muscat and Sylvaner).

The edges of the route are decorated with castles and keeps and villages of colourful and flower-covered houses huddle behind the ramparts.

Sélestat and its region, Central Alsace:

10 minutes from Colmar, the town of Sélestat, the capital of Central Alsace, is on the edge of the Wine Route and close to many regional tourist destinations such as: Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg Castle, La Volerie des Aigles (Eagle Park), La Montagne des Singes (Monkey Park), Europa Park, Unterlinden Museum, Bartholdi Museumand picturesque villages including Riquewihr (10 minutes), Ribeauvillé (8 minutes), Kaysersberg (20 minutes), Obernai (15 minutes) and Eguisheim ( 20 minutes).

Sélestat is the 3rd place of architectural heritage in Alsace: the Humanist Library, the churches of St Foy and St George, the Water Tower, the Witches Tower, the Clock Tower, the St Barbe Arsenal, the pedestrianised old town, the Maison du Pain (the House of Bread).

The Old Tower of Sélestat

Nestled in the heart of Alsace, between the Vosges mountains and the Ried lowlands, Sélestat is only 35 minutes away from Strasbourg.

Discover La Montagne des Singes

10 minutes’ drive from Hotel-Restaurant Vaillant, the Montagne des Singes monkey reserve is home to over 200 monkeys, also called “magots” that would ordinarily live in the mountains of Morocco and Algeria.

These monkeys have the ability to cope with the harsh cold of the winters in the mountains. Even though the animal’s body is adapted to the tough climate during the winter months, they are also able to cope with the gentle spring months and the heat of the summer in Alsace.

These charming monkeys or Barbary macaques now live in this reserve in Alsace.

Amateur photographers don’t forget your cameras for this trip! As you will be able to put your best animal photography into practice here. Surprise your friends and family with your shots capturing the hijinks of these cheeky monkeys that just love to be photographed.

La Volerie des Aigles

Just 10 minutes’ drive from the hotel you will find La Volerie des Aigles eagle park where you can witness some of the world’s largest birds of prey in free flight and better understand their behaviours.

Buzzards, black kites, vultures and other birds of prey are the masters of the house here. In the medieval setting of the Château de Kintzheim, in the heart of the Alsace wine region, these birds offer a breath-taking aerial display that is guaranteed to leave you stunned.

L’ill*Wald

Located in Sélestat and accessible on foot from Hotel Vaillant, L’ill*Wald is an exceptional nature reserve composed of wetlands which has been recognised on a European level.

Come and discover the Ried de Sélestat protected area, you are guaranteed to fall in love with it!

Cigoland

In Sélestat, just 5 minutes from Hotel Vaillant, and at the foot of the Haut-Koenigsbourg Massif, Cigoland is a fun and educational amusement park.

You will be welcomed by the dancing of the white storks, symbol par excellence of Alsace.

La Bibliothèque Humaniste: an interactive museum of the treasures of the Renaissance.

In the centre of Sélestat, 5 minutes’ walk from Hotel-Restaurant Vaillant, discover the La Bibliothèque Humaniste (Humanist Library), which was re-opened on the 23 June 2019 after 4 years of renovation work.

Parc du Petit Prince

Parc du Petit Price is a theme park inspired by the works of Antoine de Saint-Exupéry. It is 30 minutes’ drive from Hotel Vaillant in Ungersheim.
